Marshfield Tournament
MARSHFIELD - Devin Spratt weighs in at 120 pounds, a rather non-descript senior among the student-athletes representing North Attleboro High School in the athletic arena in size and stature.

On the wrestling mat, however, Spratt stands tall, and was taller than anyone at the Marshfield Holiday Invitational Tournament as he was named "Most Outstanding Wrestler" in the field by winning his weight class Tuesday and guiding the Red Rocketeers to first place among the 37 teams competing.

"I haven't seen him wrestle better," said North Attleboro coach Wayne Griffin of Spratt, who won all four of his matches, three of them by pins, including a first period takedown at 1:49 of Malcolm Mitchell of St. John's Prep in the title match to avenge Spratt's loss to Mitchell at the MIAA All-State Meet last season.

"He is a man among boys," Griffin said of Spratt, one of 11 North wrestlers to advance into the second day of competition, with eight of them reaching the semifinal round. ""His technique is flawless."

Leo Thibeault (three wins, two pins at 220) and Brennan Sankey (three wins, three pins at 285) both claimed No. 2 spots in the field. Teammate Colin Fiske (five wins three pins at 152) and Jack Donahue (five wins, one pin at 170) took third-place finishes.

"Tournaments like this are won and lost in the consolation bracket," said Griffin after North piled up 223 points to outdistance St. John's Prep, the second-ranked team in the state. "There are many additional team points that can be earned when kids wrestle tough and wrestle back. This was a good starting test for our team."

Thibeault lost to Jake Leeper of Weymouth in the title match while Sankey bowed to Jake Carneval of St. John's Prep in the heavyweight title match.

Fiske defeated Jason Powell of Sharon 11-4, and Donahue decisioned Zach Johnson 10-4 in the consolation finals. Finishing in fourth for North was 145-pounder Nick Gould while Big Red captain Mike Gould (138) and Alex DeVito(126) both finished fifth.

"The key to the team's success this weekend was all 14 team members earned points through out the event," added Griffin. "We knew that we'd do well, but how well, we weren't sure."

North Attleboro results: 106-Brady Folan (1-2, one pin; 113-Jake Direnzo (3-2, one pin0: 120-Devin Spratt (4-0, three pins); 126-Alex Devito (3-2, two pins); 132-Brandon Graveline (2-3, two pins); 138-Mike Gould (4-2, four pins); 145-Nick Gould (4-2, four pins); 152-Collin Fiske (5-1, three pins); 160-Jordan Tillinghast (4-3, two pins); 170-Jack Donahue (5-1, one pin); 182-Brad White (2-2, one pin), 195-Abie Ram (2-2, one pin); 220-Leo Thibeault (3-1, two pins); 285-Brennan Sankey (3-1, three pins).   Tuesday December 29, 2015
