NORTH ATTLEBORO - When the number 138 was picked out of the hat, North Attleboro High wrestling coach Wayne Griffin and senior wrestler Mike Gould knew that their quest for a victory over Franklin High was just beginning.
"The seniors set the tone right away for us," said Griffin as the unbeaten Rocketeers (16-0) claimed a 42-21 victory over the Panthers in a battle of Hockomock League super powers Wednesday night.
Gould won his match on a decision, 7-2, then the Rocketeers won the next five matches, including pins from Nick Gould (145 in the first period), Jordan Tillinghast (160 in the third period), Jack Donahue (170 in the third period) and Nick Morrison (182 in the second period) to create a 30-0 lead.
"Franklin is always a tough team," Griffin praised the Carmen Colace-led Panthers, who didn't score a point until the seventh match at 195 pounds. "Our senior crew really came through for us."
That included 132-pounder Anthony Baiungo, who put an exclamation mark upon the outcome with a dramatic 7-5 victory in overtime. Trailing 4-0 after two periods, Baiungo scored a pair of takedowns, tying the match at 5-5 to force an extra session. Then he turned another takedown to win the match.
"When we pulled that number (138-pound class) out of the cap, knowing that we would be starting off with a senior captain (Gould), who won his match, that put us on a roll," said Griffin. "The match went about as good as I thought that it would go."
North Attleboro is off until next Wednesday when it will host Taunton.
