NORTH ATTLEBORO — With 11 of his 14 wrestlers in the top four and nine in the finals, North Attleboro High coach Wayne Grfifin knew his team was in for a big night. His Red Rocketeers secured first overall with 2101/2 points and took individuals championships at four weight classes.
John David led it off for North by earning his first Hockomock League championship at 132 pounds, earning one pin and three wins along the way. “He wrestled a nice, solid day,” said Griffin.
Sophomore Dan Kummer grabbed two pins, including one to earn the 145-pound crown. He had to come from behind to do it, down 8-1 to Sharon’s Brad Schiff, but he took control in the second period and put him away.
The top seed in the 195-pound class, Bobby Deveau lived up to the billing by pinning Franklin’s Griffin Todd in the finals. “We expected him to do well and he did just that,” said Griffin.
Same goes for heavyweight Mike Anderson, who pinned two wrestlers including Steven Treannie of Oliver Ames in the first period of the championship match. “He wrestled very smart very tough,” said the coach. “He put himself in a position to score a lot of takedowns.”
North will look to clinch a regular season Hockomock League title with a win over Foxboro on Wednesday.
